Tampa product preparing for cold winter indoors

J P Rodrigues was born in Tampa and has played much of his professional career in the Sunshine State, but he is currently looking forward to playing in the great white North this winter. He has signed with the Milwaukee Wave of the National Indoor Soccer League, with the season starting in November.

J. P. played in college for Belmont University in Tennessee, where he also saw action with the PDL's Nashville Metros in 2004-2005 (33 games). In 2006 he was selected first overall in the USL draft, which began a three year stint with the Miami FC Blues of the USL First Division, playing a total of fifty-three games in all competitions for the Blues. Rodrigues was Miami's Player of the Year in his 2006 rookie season.

Like some USL players, Rodrigues plays indoors in the winter, first with the now defunct Major Indoor Soccer League's Orlando Sharks in 2007-08, where he was selected to the MISL All-Rookie Team for scoring eleven goals and five assists in twenty-five games.

J. P. followed this the next winter with a tour in the now defunct (see a pattern here?) Xtreme Soccer League's Milwaukee Wave in 2008-09. Rodrigues scored seven goals and five assists in nineteen games last season for Milwaukee. Even though the XSL disintegrated over the summer, the Wave have lived to fight another day by switching to the NISL for this coming season.

In addition to balancing an indoor and outdoor career, J. P. has made nine appearances for the Guyana National Team. Rodrigues plays for Guyana courtesy of his father being born in the South American country.

At this point, the NISL has not released a schedule or even confirmed what teams will be in the league for this winter. Last season the circuit had five clubs including the Monterrey LaRaza, Baltimore Blast, Rockford Rampage. Philadelphia Kixx, and Massachusetts Twisters. The regular season will get under way sometime in November.
